Autumn 1

Autumn 1

Our topic in English this half term is 'Labels, Lists and Captions'. So far the children have been on a label hunt around the school to identify the different labels that they can see. They have also been on a walk in the school grounds and written their own labels.

Not A Stick

We have been reading the book 'Not A Stick'. It is a story about a pig who uses a stick for lots of different things, including a baton, a sword and a fishing rod.

The children had to use their imaginations and decide what they would use their 'Not A Stick' for.

Winnie in Space

As part of our Space topic the children have been learning the story of 'Winnie in Space' using Talk for Writing. The story is about Winnie the Witch and her cat Wilbur who go to Space in a rocket. When they arrive their rocket is eaten by Space Rabbits!

The children have been very busy designing their own space creatures and writing descriptions about them using adjectives. I have been very impressed with their work!

This week the children are changing parts of the story to include their own space creature. Take a look at the 'Big Write' link on our class page to read some of the children's stories.

The children have been learning all about Neil Armstrong in History for our topic 'A Study of a Famous Person'.

This week in English the children have been reading lots of facts about him in order to create a fact file.

The 'Hedgehog' group went on a Space Adventure this week in English! They had to carefully fly their rocket around school to find clues about Neil Armstrong. They worked hard as a group to read the questions and the clues. Everyone also had a go at writing. It was very exciting!

We have looked at question marks and how they are used in writing. The children have thought of questions to ask Neil Armstrong if they met him. Some of the children recorded their questions on an iPad and then wrote them into their books.
