This half term the children will be looking at repeating patterns, sequencing and sorting, counting up to 20 forwards and backwards, simple addition and subtraction and measurement involving length and weight.
This week the children have been making patterns in lots of different ways. Some children have used paints in the Creative Area whilst others have used different counting objects to show patterns by colours.
Ordering by size
Also this week the children have learnt how to order different objects by size. Some children have used Compare Bears whilst others used characters from the Gruffalo story.
Numbers to 10 and 20
This week the children have been counting up to 10 and 20. They have made visual number lines, matched the correct quantity to each number and looked at numbers written as words. Some children have looked at how to represent numbers in different ways such as pictures or objects.
Number Sequences and More and Less
This week we have looked at different number sequences. The children have continued a number pattern and practised counting forwards and backwards. We have also looked at one more and one less.
Addition and Subtraction
This week in Maths the children are learning the different vocabulary for addition and subtraction. We will be using number lines to learn how to add by 'counting on'. Later on in the week we will be learning how to take away by 'counting back' along a number line.
This week in Year One we have been learning all about 2D shape. The children have been identifying shapes and looking at their properties. In continuous provision the children have been busy making shape pictures and going on shape hunts.
This week in Maths the children received a special letter from the Witch from the story 'Room on the Broom'. The Witch wanted to find things that were longer, shorter or the same length as her broomstick which is 1 metre long.
The children worked together in small groups to measure different objects around the classroom. I was really impressed with their teamwork and measuring skills, well done Year 1!
This half term the children will be looking at capacity and volume, telling the time (including days of the week, o'clock and half past times), money, fractions and sequencing and sorting.
This week the children have been learning all about capacity. They have learnt and used different language including full, empty, half full, half empty, nearly empty and nearly full. They have helped Goldilocks decide which container would hold the most juice for the Three Bears by reading the scales. They have also used non-standard units to explore capacity and fill different containers.
The children have been learning to tell the time in Maths this week. We have looked at the numbers on a clock and the difference between the big hand and the small hand. Everyone has looked at o'clock times. Some children have drawn the big and small hand on clocks and other groups have made their own clocks using paper plates and playdough.
We have also looked at the days of the week. Some children made their own paper chain to show the days of the week.
Over the next few weeks we will be looking at number bonds. We will be learning pairs of numbers using lots of different equipment including dominoes, natural objects, Numicon and cubes.
