Science

Autumn 1

This half term our Science topic is 'Everyday Materials'. We started the topic by identifying different types of materials and going on a material hunt around school.

We then looked at different objects to explore which materials they are made from before describing their properties.

We then focused on materials that have certain properties and carried out an investigation to discover which materials are waterproof and not waterproof.

We then had a message from Winnie the Witch who had a problem - she wanted to make an umbrella for her next adventure but didn't know which material to use to make it waterproof. The children  worked together in small groups to:

  • Explore different materials.
  • Predict which material they thought would make the best umbrella.
  • Discussed what a fair test is and decided to put the same amount of water droplets on each material.
  • Tested out a selection of materials.
  • Recorded results.
  • Discovered which material would make the best umbrella for Winnie the Witch.

The children then explored their 'Busy Bodies' by working in pairs to complete a range of activities such as hula-hooping, reading a book and catching a ball. The children had to decide and record which body parts they used for each activity.

We then focused on the 5 senses - sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing.

The children participated in carousel activities when learning about the senses including:

  • Labelling parts of the eye
  • Making a whole-class eye colour pictogram
  • A touch feely bag - can you identify the object by feeling it?
  • 'Guess Who?' - can you guess who is speaking just by the sound of their voice?
  • Smell test - smelling and guessing different scents.

In a few weeks the children will be learning about 'taste' during their D&T lessons about Food.

Spring 1

This half term our Science topic is 'Animals'. The children have learnt about different animal groups and the foods that they eat. We have looked at the body parts of animals and the colour and pattern of their skin.

The children used the sketching skills that they have learnt in Art to sketch their favourite animal so that they can label its body parts.

As part of our latest Big Write Mission the children have researched a nocturnal animal and written a report about it. Take a look at their work below.

On March 14th we will be visiting Blackpool Zoo to learn about animals and their habitats. The children will also be participating in a workshop to learn all about minibeasts. Please return permission slips and the correct money to school as soon as possible.

The children have been learning about minibeast eyes in Science this week. They used special bug viewers to explore the classroom to learn how a minibeast can see.

In the small world tray the children have been exploring different animal habitats in preparation for our visit to the Zoo. So far the children have identified animals that live in the Arctic and on a farm. We will continue looking at different habitats in the small world tray after the half term holiday.
