Odd and Even numbers
This week in Maths we have been learning all about odd and even numbers. We met 'Even Steven' and 'Odd Todd' who helped us sort numbers into odd and even. The children spotted a pattern to help them remember which numbers are odd and which are even.
We have started looking at the place value of different numbers. We have learnt about tens and units.
This week we have been looking at measuring lengths. We started by measuring length using non-standard units (unifix cubes).
On Wednesday the children found the Grumpy Giant from Jack and the Beanstalk had left us a letter. He wanted them to measure things around school using his footprints! They had to find objects longer, shorter and the same size as his foot.
They worked in pairs and small groups to measure lots of different objects. They worked carefully to make sure that they measured correctly.
This week the children have looked at measuring things by weight. They learnt the vocabulary 'heavier' and 'lighter'. They worked in their groups to find objects from around the classroom to weigh. They had to estimate which object would be the heaviest and which would be the lightest.
Doubling & Halving
Over the last few weeks the children have been learning about doubling and halving. They learnt a doubles song to help them to remember doubles to 10:
1 and 1 is 2 so tap them on your show
2 and 2 is 4 so stamp them on the floor
3 and 3 is 6 do some finger clicks
4 and 4 is 8 put your arms up straight
5 and 5 is 10 let's begin again.
The children loved learning the song and doing the actions to match as it really helped them to remember these number facts. The children have used different maths equipment to help them work out doubles before moving onto halves.
