This half term our topic in English is 'Instructions'. In the first week the children listened carefully to and followed instructions to make a pirate hat.
The children read different instructions to learn their features, including bossy words and lists of what you need. The children had to write their on instructions on 'How to wash your hands'.
We then read the story 'How to wash a woolly mammoth' and wrote a recount of the book for our Big Write.
This week each group has researched a different animal as we are going to be writing our own instruction books! Check our page later in the week for instructions on how to wash giraffes, lions, zebras, ducks and pigs!
Before writing their instructions the children had to research their chosen animals...
We have decided to enter the Young Writers 'Poetry Safari' competition. There are various prizes for winning entries including having the poems being published in a book, so fingers crossed!
We have been reading different acrostic poems about animals for inspiration for our own poems. The children have worked very hard to plan their poems and have thought of some fantastic adjectives to describe their animals and the habitats where they live. I have been so impressed with how hard they have worked.
This week Year 1 are part of an Italian cookery school! For our Teddy Bear's Picnic on Tuesday the children are going to be making their very own pizzas.
We started the week by reading different pizza instructions to look for the different features that instructions need. On Tuesday, the children used the weighing skills they have learnt in Maths to weigh out the ingredients they needed.
This week the children took part in another Big Writing Agency mission to learn all about nocturnal animals. Fizz sent the children a mission to research a nocturnal animal and write a report about them.
