This half term we will be using a new book in our English lessons called 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch'.
The story is about a lighthouse keeper called Mr Grinling who lives in a white cottage with his wife, Mrs Grinling. Every morning Mr Grinling rows across the sea to polish and clean his lighthouse and Mrs Grinling makes him a delicious lunch to send on a zip wire to the lighthouse. Unfortunately, three pesky seagulls steal his lunch each day so Mr and Mrs Grinling have to come up with a plan...
The children have shared their ideas after reading the story and have decided they would like our roleplay area to be Mrs Grinling's kitchen. Keep checking our page for photographs when we have finished making it.
The children have been very busy in the first week back after half term. They have read our new story and sequenced it in lots of different ways including using pictures and sentence strips.
For their Big Write the Hedgehog group worked in the roleplay area with Mrs Turner to retell the story. They dressed in role as different characters and then wrote about different parts of the story to make a sandwich book. The other children made their own storybook to retell the story. All of these fantastic pieces of writing will be going up on display in the classroom.
Earlier this week we received a very exciting delivery from the postman - a postcard from Mrs Grinling! She needed our help to write a shopping list for her so that she could make Mr Grinling a delicious lunch for his birthday. Some of the children had baskets of food and drink to choose from, some groups worked in the roleplay area and some went on an adjective hunt outside.
At the end of the week the children some fantastic, descriptive shopping lists for Mrs Grinling.
