Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, supported by the Kapow Primary scheme, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to become confident, creative and reflective artists.

Equity, Diversity and Justice

Our Art and Design curriculum reflects the diverse world in which our pupils live. Pupils encounter a broad and representative range of artists, designers, craftspeople and creative traditions from different cultures, backgrounds and perspectives. This enables children to appreciate different experiences and viewpoints, challenge stereotypes and develop respect for others. Through art, pupils are encouraged to explore themes of identity, culture, fairness and social justice, helping them to understand how creativity can communicate ideas, represent experiences and contribute to positive change.

SEND, Inclusion and Adaptive Teaching

We are committed to ensuring that every pupil can access and participate fully in Art and Design. Teachers use adaptive teaching approaches, appropriate scaffolding, modelling, resources and practical support to remove barriers to learning while maintaining high expectations for all. The needs of pupils with SEND are considered carefully when planning and delivering lessons, with adaptations made where appropriate to materials, processes, instructions and outcomes. Pupils are supported to develop independence and make meaningful progress from their individual starting points, while ensuring that they remain connected to the same ambitious curriculum as their peers.

Knowledge and Skills

Pupils explore a wide range of materials, techniques and processes, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printing, textiles and mixed media. They learn about artists and designers and are taught to experiment, develop and refine ideas, make creative choices and evaluate their work. Sketchbooks provide a space for pupils to record ideas, practise techniques, respond to artists and reflect on their learning. Knowledge and skills are revisited and built upon over time, enabling pupils to develop increasing confidence, independence and creativity.
