Sports Premium Funding 2022 – 2023

How are we planning to spend our PE and sport grant this year?

At Cuerden Church School we believe in providing our children with a broad and balanced PE curriculum which will motivate them to lead healthy and active lifestyles. From the government this year, our school has received the allocated sports grant of £30,981.44. The children and staff will benefit from a new PE curriculum which develops knowledge, skills and understanding. Specialist coaches will continue to lead intra-school competitions and the impact of progress will be supported by the PE Passport app.

It is expected that schools will see an improvement in the following 5 indicators:

Swimming

Swimming and water safety remains an important part of the PE curriculum at our school as we believe that it is another way of helping children to lead healthy and active lifestyles. Schools have the responsibility to publish swimming data and we have used some of the sports grant for this.

This data shows how the children have met the National Curriculum expectations. By the end of Key Stage Two, children should be able to:

  • Swim 25 metres.
  • Use a variety of different strokes (e.g. breast stroke, back stroke, front crawl).
  • Be able to perform a safe self-rescue.

Current swimming provision:

Throughout the academic year, pupils in Year 4 (Autumn to Spring) and Year 5 (Spring to Summer) attend weekly swimming lessons at the local leisure centre. During their weekly sessions, the children are grouped according to their ability and are taught to:

  • Swim confidently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
  • Use a range of strokes.
  • Perform a safe, self-rescue in different water situations.

The children will be assessed in the water at different stages throughout the year and data will also be received and reported on our website.

Of the current Year 6 cohort:

  • 56.66% (17 out of 30 children) can swim competently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
  • 83.33% (25 out of 30 children) can swim 10m front crawl.
  • 63.33% (19 out of 30 children) can swim 10m backstroke.
  • 56.66% (17 out of 30 children) can swim 25m front crawl & backstroke.
  • 100% can perform a safe self-rescue.

This class missed swimming in Y4 due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. Some children will receive top-up sessions when in Y6.

Further improvement and development:

In the Spring Term, we will have ‘Pools for Schools’ in school leading a two-week swimming course which will include top-up sessions for children in Year 6 and introductory sessions for children in Year 3 and possibly other year groups too.
