What is a School Council?

Our School Council is a group of pupils who are elected to represent the views of all pupils and to improve their school. Each year voting takes place in every classroom, for the children who have campaigned to be elected to the School Council. Each class sends two representatives.

What does it do?

Our School Council meets (with a teacher present) to discuss and sort out problems and ideas. Members of the School Council will be responsible for carrying out ideas that they have agreed.

Our School Council purposes and aims

Our School Council tries to encourage pupils to develop a sense of responsibility towards the life and improvement of our school, its community and its environment. We hope to prepare pupils for citizenship by teaching them about roles, rights and responsibilities, in school and the community.

Our School Council helps to ensure that Cuerden Church School pupils have:

• a safe, happy and fair environment in which to grow and learn

• a place to voice their ideas and then to act upon them with guidance.

We will do this by:

• talking to our classmates to collect ideas and suggestions

• making sure that everyone’s views and opinions are valued

• having regular meetings to share our ideas.

Our School Council gives our children the opportunity to:

• take an active part in decision-making in school, where appropriate

• learn to speak, listen and debate

• plan, organise and monitor small projects

• mediate and negotiate

• learn problem-solving skills

• budget and manage money

• experience the democratic process.
